The County Enterprise Boards were established in 1993 to provide support at local level to the micro enterprise sector ( businesses with less than 10 employees) and to cultivate and expand an ethos of local entrepreneurship.

The statutory basis for all City and County Enterprise Boards was established in the Industrial Development Act 1995. Each County Enterprise Board is a not for profit limited company whose activities are performed on the basis of an agreement drawn up between it and the Department of Enterprise Trade & Employment. The Exchequer, supported by the EU provides most of the funding for the County Enterprise Boards.

A voluntary Board of Directors manage the South Dublin County Enterprise Board. The Board meets monthly and is assisted by voluntary sub committees e.g the Evaluation sub-committee which makes recommendations on the most appropriate form, or level, of support for applicants; the HR sub-committee, the Audit sub-committee and the Youth Enterprise sub committee. South Dublin County Enterprise Board has a staff of 5.
