Sixteen new high-tech and knowledge-intensive business ventures, involving 34 individuals, have joined NovaUCD’s 2010 entrepreneurship programme. The NovaUCD 2010 Campus Company Development Programme (CCDP), which has just commenced, assists academic and research entrepreneurs at University College Dublin in bringing their innovative ideas from intellectual concepts to fully developed and sound commercial businesses. NovaUCD, the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre, is responsible for the commercialisation of intellectual property arising from UCD research programmes.

The public were given a sneak preview of the ‘Irish entrepreneurs of tomorrow’ at the Country’s biggest student enterprise competition, held earlier today in Croke Park. Teenagers from every county, aged from thirteen to eighteen, competed at the Student Enterprise Awards National Final at the GAA headquarters, which was organised by the County and City Enterprise Boards. Students from Presentation College in Carlow won the Senior Category Award for ‘Rap-It’, a keyring device to keep ear-phones untangled.

School gifts for graduates and a new LCD recycling device were two business ideas that earned their creators the title of Young Entrepreneur 2010 at an awards ceremony in Killarney on Thursday the 22nd April 2010. The awards were the culmination of the six-month Young Entrepreneur Programme, now in its third year.
Michael Dillane, a transition year student from CBS in Tralee, beat off over 350 secondary school students for the title with his business plan for a school gifts website. Schoolgiftsforgrads.com offers leaving certificate students a wide range of gifts in varying price, quality and style. Michael is already running the business from his own home.

European SME Week 2010, which will take place from 25 May to 1 June, aims to:
- provide information on what the EU and national, regional and local authorities are offering as support to micro, small and medium-sized businesses; - promote entrepreneurship so that more people, and in particular younger ones, seriously consider becoming an entrepreneur as a career option; - give recognition to entrepreneurs for their contribution to Europe's welfare, jobs, innovation and competitiveness.

An initiative of the Action Comunity Enterprise Centre in Clondalkin which aims to create a real opportunity for an entrepreneur to reach their full potential will be launched on the 27th April 2010 by Sean Gallagher of RTÉ’s Dragons’ Den. The 2010 Business Launch is looking for entrepreneurs to enter the competition and the winning start-up business will receive a €40,000 prize fund package which will include a business premises.
All individuals with an entrepreneurial flair are asked to attend the launch on the 27th of April at 11.30am in Action Community Enterprise Centre, Bawnogue Road, Clondalkin. This will be a unique opportunity to meet the organisers and have a sneak preview of the incubation premises on offer as part of the prize. All attendees will receive an information pack on the day with materials on the competition.
