Annual GMIT Innovation in Business Centre (IiBC) “Spirit of Entrepreneurship” Event In GMIT Castlebar PDF Print E-mail

gmitSeveral hundred people are expected to attend the annual GMIT Innovation in Business Centre (IiBC) “Spirit of Entrepreneurship” event in GMIT Castlebar on Monday 19th September to hear about funding sources and supports for start-ups. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny will attend the event which commences at 5pm in St Mary’s Hall, GMIT. Two leading entrepreneur businessmen, Sean Gallagher, panelist on tv programme Dragon’s Den, and Ciaran Crean, co-founder of micksgarage.ie, will address the gathering.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton T.D. recently launched the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Report for Ireland for 2010. The report, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, confirms that Ireland is highly entrepreneurial. Despite a decrease in the level of early stage entrepreneurial activity this year (6.8%) reflecting the current economic challenges, the rate of early stage entrepreneurial activity in Ireland continues to be one of the highest within Europe. The rate of established entrepreneurs among the adult population (8.6%) is also high, on a par with Australia (8.5%) and slightly ahead of the US (7.7%).

GMIT LogoAn innovative, practical based enterprise training and mentoring programme for people who plan to start up their own businesses or develop their existing one is to commence in the GMIT Innovation in Business Centre (IiBC) in Castlebar in October following the success of the two previous programmes. South West Mayo Development Company will be providing support with the development of the programme.

Nova UCDProfessor William Gallagher, a leading cancer biology researcher in UCD’s School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, was yesterday presented with the NovaUCD 2011 Innovation Award. The Award was presented by Dr Hugh Brady, President, University College Dublin (UCD) to recognise Professor Gallagher’s ongoing successes in the commercialisation of intellectual property arising from UCD research programmes.

Social Entrepreneurs IrelandEight exceptional organisations have been announced as finalists of the 2011 Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Awards, each vying for a part of the €650,000 prize fund. The prize fund, supported by DCC plc, has increased by over a third this year in response to the increasing strength of social entrepreneurship in Ireland and the growing need for the services social entrepreneurs provide.
